If you can break it, you can fix it
Musician’s Focal Dystonia is a learned condition. It’s not like a flu which you can catch when someone is sneezing at you. It’s not like an accident, which comes out of the blue and breaks you. It’s not something which attacks you when you’re looking in the other direction.
It’s a state of body and mind, which you – unconsciously – taught yourself.
So your first reaction might be to blame yourself. But, to see the hope and possibility in that you taught yourself MFD would be better.
What I mean by this is, if you learned it, you can unlearn it.
All you have to do is to repeat the right things enough times to hack your own “focal dystonia program”. But how to do that? I’ll tell you how I started.
I figured that being a professional flutist with two degrees and 8 years of teaching experience, I ought to know how to play the flute in theory. So, I started to teach myself like a beginner from the square one, but this time with efficient body use and better habits. Of course it takes more time at the beginning as it would take with a real beginner, but remember: you have an old program to hack, not a new one to write.
With patience and with time, you can turn on this road, and “forget” your focal dystonia, step by step.
